IT-assistive product of the year 2010

The IT-assistive product of the year 2010 became SkanRead from Mikro Værkstedet.

The IT-assistive product of the year was elected at the HITfair on Wednesday the 22nd of September at 2 pm. Ten products were nominated for the prize, and the winner was SkanRead Mobile from Mikro Værksedet A/S. SkanRead Mobile is developed especially for word-blind and other persons with reading difficulties, who now are able to scan a text anywhere and get it read out with SkanRead.

The panel of judges attached importance to the products new innovative value, the utillity value as against the users and the degree of ability.

"SkanRead Mobile won because it works on all Android-telephones. It is a cheap assistive product, in a price range that enables the user to invest in the product for himself, if it does not get granted. Its able to handle even difficult texts with colours and different types of characters, and the user gets a message returned within half a minute," says Ole Wriedt, from the Danish Centre for Assistive Technology who has been project cordinator for the process.

Other aspects which the panel of judges attached importance to was, that the user sends to a server which does the job, the several different reading voices there is to choose from, and finaly was the perspective of freedom an important factor in the election of a winner.

You are clear of a computer and can use it wherever you are. The product provides optimal freedom, says Ole Wriedt.

The panel of judges consisted of a school consultant, an IT-consultant, a teacher, an occupational therapist and a vision consultant.
